What is Cancer?
Cancer is a disease where cells multiply rapidly without control. Cancerous cells divide without regard to normal limits. If not treated early enough, cancer may spread throughout the body. There are three types of cancer: carcinoma (a tumor), sarcoma (a malignant tumor), and lymphoma (a type of neoplasm).
Most patients have some type of surgery to remove their tumors. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone treatment, immunotherapy, or a combination of these treatments may also be given to kill any remaining cancer cells. Sometimes chemotherapy drugs damage the bone marrow, making it difficult for blood cells to develop normally.
There are many different kinds of cancers. The most common types of cancer are breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, leukemia/lymphoma, brain cancer, and ovarian cancer
Early-stage cancer generally does not cause symptoms until it grows large enough to press against nearby organs. Symptoms vary depending on the location of cancer. Early detection increases the chances of successful treatment.
